Community Involvement

While in the past, I have been involved with organizations such as a volunteer for the Special Olympics and for the American Red Cross as a CPR and First Aid Instructor, the majority of my current community involvement is through the Boy Scouts of America.

The Boy Scouts of America is a fantastic organization that in addition to offering numerous leadership opportunities, including at the adult volunteer level, they also offer numerous training opportunities both in-person and on line.  I have completed all training components for each of my positions listed below.

There are also numerous supplemental training opportunities, of which I have too many to list here, and most would have very little relevance to professional employment tasks.  Suffice to say, however, that this is one more indication of my desire to be fully trained and qualified for any tasks I agree to undertake.

Volunteer Positions

June 2012-March 2016. Cubmaster, Pack 468, National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

Key duties include developing entertaining, educational monthly programs for 45-55 boys ages 6-11.  Organizing and running recruiting events.  Coordinating the efforts of 10-14 other adult leaders.   Communicating with and educating parents.  Coordinating unit activities with those of the other units in the district.  I have also been, and remain the webmaster for their website.

March 2015 – April 2019. Committee Member, Troop 1988, National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

Primary duties include reviewing the effectiveness of the program and serving as the webmaster for their website.  Informally, I serve as a resource with vast scouting experience and in exchanging information between the troop adult leadership and the district and council.

March 2016 – present. Assistant Cubmaster, Pack 468, National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

Having successfully “trained my successor”, I have remained involved in the organization as a mentor and resource as needed.

September 2013 – June 2016. Assistant Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner, Seneca District, National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

The Roundtable is a monthly meeting that provides knowledge, program ideas, skills, and fun resources for new and returning adult leaders of the cub scout program. Roundtable commissioners enable and motivate unit leaders to deliver an outstanding program to their Scout troops.

My primary responsibilities were to greet new adult leaders and guide them through roundtable activities.  I also served as a substitute instructor and in running the round table as needed,

June 2016 – February 2023. Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner, Seneca District, National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

As the roundtable commissioner, I am responsible to plan and conduct monthly training typically serving 20-30 adult volunteers to help guide them in conducting quality programs for the youth members they serve.  I coordinate the activities of 6-8 assistant roundtable commissioners. These tasks include presenting materials encouraged by the National BSA organization, and in identifying and developing training for the needs of the local leaders.

February 2015 – February 2022.  Course Instructor, University of Scouting, National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

As a course instructor, once a year I plan and conduct one or more classes that offer detailed background and helpful instruction to adult scout leaders in addressing one of the many challenges the leaders face.  Thus far, I have taught 4 courses serving approximately 120 participants on the subject of “Addressing youth behavior”, an advanced course of instruction within the program.

February 2019 – December 2023.  Committee Chairperson & Founder, Troop 1920, National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

I helped to found a new Scout Troop for Girls, and have been the Committee Chairperson since that time.  Primary duties include working to ensure that the Troop leadership has the tools and support they need to run an effective program, and reviewing the effectiveness of the program.  Having stepped down as the Committee Chairperson, I remain involved as a committee member.

April 2019 – present.  Assistant Scoutmaster, Troop 1988, National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

As an Assistant Scoutmaster my duties include advising, guiding, and mentoring the youth leadership of the Boy Scout Troop.  I assist in providing training as required, and have responsibilities for supervision and safety.  It was particularly challenging to keep such an active program operating through the COVID-19 Pandemic.

February 2023 – Present. District Commissioner, Seneca District, National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

Within the District level for the Boy Scouts of America, I was promoted from the Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner to the District Commissioner.  In that role, I manage a team of 18 Assistant District Commissioners and Unit Commissioners in delivering the Scouting experience to 37 units and over 1100 youth members; providing mentorship to unit leaders; working to recruit new members and units; and resolving challenges faced by the organization and membership.
